The work of David is extremely accomplished and popular, although conservative and somewhat bland. Most of his work was of traditional religious themes, which has been copied several times by others.
In this same painting we find two Virgin Marys, impliyng two stages in time, one is in the background on a donkey accompanied by St Joseph, the other being the same in the foreground feeding her child. You also may notice that the positions of the Virgins are exact opposites.
