WOMAN IN A GARDEN (1929-30)

WOMAN IN A GARDEN
All the works that Picasso produced have the same artistic value - paintings, sculptures or ceramics were worked with absolute dedication.

This scuplture results from the collaboration with another sculptor, Julio González. After González began in the field of metal, Picasso brought his conceptual innovation: the technique and constructive elements in the work of art. In this magnificent sculpture the different pieces are welded together in such a way that the seams are quite visible, the solder being used as another artistic element.

FEMME AU VASE
(WOMAN WITH A VASE)
(1933)
(Mujer en el Jardín)
Fusing with solder in Bronze
220 x 122 x 110 cm

Reina Sofía National Museum

A sculpture of great size, 2´20 metres heigh and a general base of one square metre. In this work, Picasso presents a woman who is holding up an amphora in her outstretched hand. The concept is completely different to "Woman in a Garden" both artistically and technically, although the principal theme is the same: a woman.
Despite being known as "Femme au vase", it seems its original title was "La porteuse d'offrande" or "Woman with a Vase" (as it is known in Spain), according to Picasso´s last wife, Jaqueline Roque.

MAN WITH A LAMB
(1943)
(El Hombre del Cordero)
Cast in a mould of Plaster -two figures-
222,5 x 78 x 78 cm

Reina Sofía National Museum

Another sculpture of great size, which represents a lamb trapped in the arms of a man, fighting for its freedom. The idea of freedom is reflected in the animal´s anguish, enveloped in the hands of the immobile and rigid man who takes it. The fixed and firm pose of the man´s legs highlights the contrast between both feelings.
The evolution of Picasso´s scuplture progressed from a pseudocubist concept (his first sculpture -"Woman in a Garden"-) to this figurative image with classic criteria, passing the volumetric vision of "Woman with a Vase".
