Short biography of Juan de Juanes

Vicente Juan Maçip was born in Valencia, Spain, around 1523, son of the painter Vicente Maçip. He is one of the most popular Valencian masters of art. It appears that Juan de Juanes studied in Paolo de San Locadio´s workshop and went to Italy where he was heavily influenced by the masters of the Italian school, especially Raphael.

His work is a great example of the reflection of religion and the spirit of Catholicism in art, using the techniques of manierism . His sensitive use and combination of richness of colour lead us to believe that Juanes also admired the Dutch painters and was able to improve his own techniques by copying them.

Juan de Juanes dies in 1579. His work has been considered a model for ecclesiastical art for years.
