Art in 20th Century is composed by different streams called "isms". Movements do not follow each other in time: many are contemporary and share feautures between them. Avant-garde cannot be understood if we try to set a chronological order. It is a common place seeing 20th century art as a rupture with tradition. This rupture does not begin in 20th century; it comes from the end of 19th one. 1863 can be taken as a beginning for modern painting. This year Manet produced Lunch on the Grass, showed in the Lounge of Rejected. This work took its subject from Italian Renaissance, but its way of exposing it originated a scandal.
Necessity of change gave birth to different and even contradictory streams: conceptual and realistic ones.
