Biography:
Peter Paul Rubens was born in Siegen, Germany, on 28th June 1577. He studied and worked in diverse art workshops of the then masters, until 1603 when he met and worked for Vincent Gonzaga. In March of 1603, Gonzago sent Rubens to Madrid to take the Spanish king a collection of works of art, this being his first encounter with the Spanish court. In 1609 he married Isabel Brant , who died in 1626. While he was married he produced a large number of works (the ceiling of the jesuit church in Amberes, canvases for the palace of Luxemburg). He later remarried Helene Farment. Rubens painted for the English and the Spanish courts, his last works being for King Philip IV. These were of a mythological nature, and were painted in the king's hunting pavilion. Rubens died on the 30th of May 1640 after a long battle with a disease wich limited his ability to paint during his later years.
